My Three Years in the Army Air Forces in World War II - William Thomas Wright

This book was written by William Thomas Wright (who had been a fighter pilot with the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War) upon the urging of his children, who wanted him to leave an account of his wartime experiences.

Wright shares with the reader the full scope of his flight training (from preflight to advanced - which was a daunting challenge for any aspiring pilot because the 'washout' or failure rate was around 50%) which began in March 1943 and culminated with Wright receiving his wings a year later.  Eventually, he was posted to a fighter unit with the 9th Air Force in Europe in the autumn of 1944.  He flew the P-47 Thunderbolt on ground-support missions on behalf of Patton's Third Army and received his discharge on December 8, 1945.
