I read this book many eons ago as a college sophomore. It marked my introduction to erotic literature. The book is written with an utter frankness about an Englishwoman's sexual life in the earliest days of the British incursion into New Zealand.
Stella McLeod began as a woman very much of her own era. She hadn't been in New Zealand very long with her husband (an army officer) before she was abducted and adopted by the Maoris. She gives the reader some interesting insights into Maori life and culture, including their sexual practices. For a 19 year old reader (which I was at the time I read this book), "Oh Wicked Country!" was a revelatory experience.
