Buffalo Soldiers in Italy: Black Americans in World War II - Hondon B. Hargrove This book, written by a scholar and veteran of the 92nd Infantry Division, offers a fine, well-balanced account of the combat experiences of this unit in Italy during 1944 and 1945.

Reading this book gave me a better appreciation of the hazards (in battle) and the gross indignities Jim Crow racism heaped upon the Black soldier in the Second World War. (My uncle was a decorated junior officer in the 370th Regimental Combat Team of the 92nd Infantry Division, which was the first element of the unit to be committed to combat in August 1944.)
